A Few Old Hindi Movies Of The 1980s Compared To Recent Movies

Ok, am not an oldie as you might have thought looking at the title. On the contrary, am quite young - well if you think 25 is young. I was not so fond of old movies earlier to be honest, infact, I must have started watching old hindi movies only about 3-4 years ago. I was introduced to them by my friend's father, who is a die hard Bollywood fan, especially old Hindi movies. At that time, the first thing that came to my mind was - "old bugger" - ofcourse I didn't tell him that straight on his face.

But when I actually watched a movie (this one wasn't that old, but somewhat - 1983 to be precise). It was called Ardh Satya, and I was astonished at the magnificent performances delivered by the star cast. Especially Om Puri, who I think is one of the best actors in Indian cinema. Thats the film which made me realize that Bollywood has a great and precious history. Till then, my perception of Bollywood movies were based on current movies, but I realized how wrong I was. And I started exploring many more old hindi movies. And some of the movies that I found were absolute gems, and I couldn't even think of any comparable recent or new Hindi movie! Another of my favourite old Hindi movies is Jaane bhi do yaaro. It weaves in comedy and simplicity in a beautiful narration which kept me engrosed all through the film.

You can find youtube videos for both the movies that I mentioned here :

  • Ardh Satya (Old 1983 movie)
  • Jaane bhi do Yaaro (Old 1983 movie)
  • And here are some more old hindi movies of the 1980's :

  • And if you are a fan of Om Puri like I am, here is a list of Hindi movies of Om Puri from the 1980's :
  • Hindi movies of Om Puri from the 1980s
  • In that list, I would also recommend you to check out Sadgati. Its a bit arty types, but brilliant. After all, its directed by movie maestro Satyajit Ray !

The number of films released per year in recent years is probably much higher than those released in say the 1980's. And it surprises me that many of the recent Hindi movies are not up to the mark to those old golds, even with all the advancement in technology. But ofcourse, I donot mean to say that there isn't any good movie being released nowadays - ofcourse there are. But a very few. I am glad that my friend's father introduced me to these old movies, so I now have a wonderful collection to explore during my free time. I'll probably write more about them when I watch some which I think you should watch too. Till then , ciao
